Twenty-five years ago, I was in Puerto Rico, at home, playing with my children, when regular television programming was suddenly interrupted by the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I vividly remember the uncertainty, the confusion, and that overwhelming feeling that something monumental was taking place. New York was far away from us, yet at the same time, I had never felt a place so close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I watched those images unfold, I reflected on something that still moves me to this day, 25 years later: what happens when we stop seeing ourselves as separate individuals and begin to recognize ourselves as part of a single system?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared Pain and the Power of “Us”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the towers collapsed, I felt our collective heart skip a beat. Millions of people, many of them complete strangers to one another, shared the pain, the uncertainty, and a profound need to help each other in the face of collective trauma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, we were less “I” and much more “we.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That experience remained etched in my mind not only as a historic event, but also as a powerful reminder of our human nature: we are relational beings<\/strong>. What happens to one of us can touch many. Someone else’s pain can become our own, and another person’s need can awaken our deep capacity to care, accompany, and uphold one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Through Systemic Therapy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps one of the core reasons why I believe so deeply in a systemic perspective<\/strong> in counseling and therapy. We do not exist in a vacuum; our emotions, our wounds, and our healing are deeply intertwined with the people around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My cousin was working near the World Trade Center. All at once, what we were watching on television was no longer just a tragedy happening somewhere else. It touched our family. It touched our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-five years after that day, I invite you to reflect on your own connections. When the weight of the world or your own personal history feels too heavy to carry alone, remember that it is okay to seek support. You do not have to heal in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
